What do you love about boxing? How did you get into training? What are you fighting for?

I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t constantly active. While I was embarrassingly awful at any kind of team sport, I thrived in individual athletic activities. I was a ballet dancer for 18 years, dancing 20+ hours a week and always rehearsing for an upcoming performance. Upon moving to New York I wasn’t able to continue dancing, so I needed to find a new way to stay active. I took barre and Pilates classes at random studios for a few years because those classes were the most similar to dance, but I really missed working toward something and having that one core activity I was passionate about. Eventually I decided to try something new on a whim and stumbled into DuShane’s class at Overthrow. While I had no idea what I was doing in that first class, I fell in love with boxing that day and knew that I wanted to go as far as I could with the sport. I love that boxing pushes you to both your physical and mental limits in a way that no other sport does, as well as the fact that it challenges pretty much every fitness component (endurance, speed, agility, power, etc.) within just a couple of minutes.

After graduating college I worked in corporate business development for several years, but I was absolutely miserable sitting at a desk all day every day. Fitness has been my lifelong passion, so I eventually quit corporate life to become a personal trainer. I’m excited to be working at Overthrow because even when I was brand new to boxing, all of the trainers made me feel comfortable and welcomed me into the community, and they played a significant role in improving my confidence both inside and outside of the ring. I hope to do the same for anyone who trains with me, while providing a fun but intense workout.

Describe your style of teaching.
I’m a personal trainer, so form is always the most important focus when I’m training someone. I believe that if you’re going to learn how to box, you should learn the proper form and technique. Of course there’s more to boxing than just simply throwing punches, so I also include endurance, agility, and conditioning training. No matter your level, you can always expect to be dripping in sweat, to be a little sore the next day, and to have learned something new that’ll improve your boxing.
